Life Cycles

Looking around in the garden, we spotted a few bugs and things going about their business, just crawling along in the dirt. The children wanted a closer look with our magnifying glasses:

It is very interesting how different creatures grow in different ways! This is why our focus on Life Cycles has been quite exciting and the children have not missed any opportunity to explore and learn.

Did you know that:
Some creatures start out as eggs. Then they come out of their tiny eggs as small caterpillars (larvae). When they keep eating, they will become BIG caterpillars and that's when they make a chrysalis, pupa or cocoon and go to sleep for a bit.

When they wake up, they come out as the adult insects -- like a butterflies, or in the case of our mealworms, beetles!

Our mealworms loved to eat lettuce and carrot skins.
They felt really tickly on our hands and even made us squirm a bit!

 Frog Tank

We looked after some lovely jelly-like frogspawn. After a week, they became tadpoles... tiny ones! Of course by the end of the second week, we noticed that they had grown bigger and fatter. Have a look!

These are our frogspawns
Little tadpoles learning how to swim
Big, fat tadpoles

We can't wait for them to become proper little frogs.

Five Little Speckled Frogs Song

Five little speckled frogs
Sat on a speckled log
Eating the most delicious bugs... yum, yum!
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Then there were four green speckled frogs... glub, glub!

Meet our Mummy Frog

Tadpoles with very long tails!
Time for some Life Cycle Puzzles!

A Closer Look at Eggs: different sizes, colours and patterns

(Duck, Chicken and Quail)

Look at the markings on this quail's egg!

Yes, we tried to smell it...

... it smelled a bit phoo-ey!

Zoo Lab

Look at the creatures we met when Zoo Lab came to visit:

Karl came to show us some of his friends. This is Henrietta the cockroach.

I'm not really sure if I want to touch her, but she looks very interesting.

This is Bubbles the Tarantula. We were very interested but the grown ups were not too sure!
Bruce was having a good look at us and had a little walk around Elephant Room.
Bruce felt very rough!
Cory the corn snake was a very nice colour.
Cory wrapped himself around Karl's hands. I did touch him in the end.
Dinky the Rat was our favourite in Dolphin Room. We really enjoyed Karl's visit and hope he comes back again soon.
